The Histology Technician performs standard and specialized histology procedures for preparation of tissue and other specimens for light microscopic examination by the staff pathologists.
Responsibilities: 1.Receives specimens into the computer, Laboratory Information System (LIS)
2.Assures proper specimen identification and labeling.
3.Performs standard and specialized histology procedures by preparing tissue for microscopic examination by the pathologists.
4.Performs grossing as specified, embedding, sectioning, coverslipping, and staining of specimens.
5.Oversees intake and release of specimens from the morgue.
6.Maintains both Histology and the Morgue in a way that meets regulatory needs and keeps area clean and organized.
7.Monitors supply needs and participates in equipment evaluations.
8.Communicates regularly with Pathology staff regarding their testing needs.
9. Demonstrates working knowledge of testing procedures
10.Maintains work area according appropriately and assists with meeting accrediting regulations.
11.Implements and monitors quality control and results of work. Resolves problems.
12.Performs tasks efficiently.
13.Participates in education efforts of the department.
14.Other duties as required.
Other information: Technical Expertise 1.Experience in lab skills is required.
2.Experience in performing high complexity testing is required.
3.Experience performing histologic work is required.
4.Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
5.Experience in healthcare is preferred.
6.Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience 1.Education: Associate's degree in Histology or related field is required. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
2.Certification: Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology at the technician level within 18 months of date of hire is preferred.
3.Years of relevant experience: 0 to 2 years is preferred.
