A Research Associate position is available in the lab of Dr. Serghei Mangul in the Titus Department of Clinical Pharmacy, School of Pharmacy at the University of Southern California. The Mangul lab aims to improve the techniques of bioinformatics in order to better understand the mechanisms of disease. This includes designing, developing, and applying novel and robust data-driven, computational approaches that will accelerate the diffusion of genomics and biomedical data into translational research and education.
The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.
The Titus Department of Clinical Pharmacy unites patient-centered care with health system insight and analysis. The departmentâs faculty represents a wide range of clinical and research specialties, from community pharmacy and geriatrics to oncology and psychiatry. The Titus Department of Clinical Pharmacy is one of the nationâs leading research programs devoted to pursuing new knowledge and advances in pharmacotherapy, translational research, regulatory science and related areas.
The successful candidate will perform research and develop novel bioinformatics algorithms and conducting large-scale integrative analyses of biological and genomic datasets. The anticipated area of research is immunogenomics. The successful candidate will work on methods to characterize the individual immune response from high throughput sequencing data. In particular, on methods that utilize the gene counts to perform computational deconvolution, an efficient method to identify cell type composition of the sample directly from the bulk gene expression data. The developed computational method will be applied across 70,000 RNA-Seq samples. Inferred immune cell types will be used to characterize the immune response and be used as biomarkers across various infectious diseases. Additional information about our lab and research can be found at: http://www.sergeimangul.com.
The position is available for 1 year and renewable contingent on successful progress and available funding. Salary will be competitive. The University of Southern California offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and short and long term disability insurance.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in Python, C++, and Unix Bash Shell is essential. Competitive applicants will also have extensive experience in working with high performance clusters and conducting bioinformatics research, and will have the desire to apply for external fellowship funding. Preference will be given to candidates with a compelling publication record, evidence of substantial research productivity, and ability to successfully communicate scientific information.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The position is expected to start in Fall 2019, though specific dates are negotiable.
Interested candidates should submit a CV, short (1-2 pages) cover letter describing your research interests and fit within the lab, and contact information for 2-3 references.
