EH&SÂ supports the academic research and administrative activities of the university by anticipating potential risks, evaluating safety procedures, and developing new safety procedures and programs.
We are seeking a Chemical Lab Safety Specialist I to join our Environmental Health & Safety Division (EH&S).Â Â Under the supervision of the Chemical Safety Program Manager, the Chemical Lab Safety Specialist will assist with implementation of the university lab safety program and the chemical hygiene plan.Â
Additional job responsibilities include:
Developing written materials detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects, and train research personnel on related topics
Assisting PIs and lab researchers in the development of lab specific SOPs as they relate to lab operations and experimental procedures
Working with labs to identify safety needs and gaps and to implement programs that will address those needs.
Performing safety inspections, including annual lab inspections, biannual inspections of high-hazard labs; personnel protective equipment (PPE) inspections; short notice inspections of laboratories of concern, and other inspections as required. Documents results and recommends corrective action where non-compliance is found.
Assisting in the development and implementation of safety programs to meet University and regulatory requirements. Establishes documents and communicates standards, guidelines, and procedures.
Providing technically-sound advice and recommendations to PIs, lab personnel, and students to ensure maximum safety and regulatory compliance
Developing and conducting safety training
Preparing fact sheets and other authoritative informational materials on safety and regulatory topics
Investigation and documentation of laboratory safety incidents; formulation of appropriate safety recommendations/requirements in response to findings.
Emergency on-call coverage (2 weeks/year as primary and 2 weeks/year as secondary)
Will perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
