This is an exciting job opportunity for a motivated and innovative scientist that is a Medical Device Subject Matter Expert to work with a team of Research Scientists, Medical Device and Drug professionals, Environmental Scientists and Food and Drug Branch staff to provide advanced technical expertise, education, training, and guidance aligned with the Program’s mission. We work cooperatively and collaboratively with multiple internal and external state, local, federal and private partners.
The incumbent works under general direction from the Research Scientist Supervisor II (Food and Drug Sciences), in the Food and Drug Branch, Science and Education Section. The Research Scientist III (Food and Drug Sciences), (RS III [F&DS]), plans, organizes, and directs scientific research studies of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity. Makes independent, complex decisions and develops and evaluates original, creative scientific techniques to analyze safe and effective medical device manufacturing processes and drug manufacturing processes (as it relates to medical devices). Serves as a scientific advisor or consultant to the program in areas such as assessment of medical device manufacturing, drug manufacturing, and occasionally cosmetic chemistry and pharmacology. Utilizes knowledge of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and State regulations pertaining to medical device and drug manufacturing, and knowledge of good manufacturing practices to develop risk assessment strategies.
Conducts highly specialized phases of a major scientific project or investigation which may require coordination between other State, local or Federal agencies. Serves as a scientific advisor during medical device and drug inspections. Presents scientific research or investigations conducted to public health experts and the community regarding the regulated commodities and represents California at state and national scientific meetings. Publishes research and findings in scientific journals.
