Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned scientific research organization located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking a motivated temporary Industrial Safety Manager to join our Environmental Health & Safety team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the daily operation of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. The candidate will also provide support to Laboratory staff for occupational and environmental safety and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.
Other responsibilities include: - Assists with the development and implementation of training programs related to the Laboratory’s industrial safety operations. This includes confined space entry, electrical, scaffold and ladder, small and large power tool, fall protection, back, Grounds and Building Services Departments, arch flash, lockout tag out, forklift, and power industrial truck safety training programs. - Performs surveys and inspections of all Laboratory facilities for fire code compliance and compliance with OSHA required programs. Communicates corrective actions required to Laboratory staff, guests, and visitors in order to abate deficiencies. - Provides safety training and technical support to all Laboratory staff and course participants. Serves or provides a support function to the Laboratory’s IBC, IRB, and RSC, as required. - Acts as one of the Laboratory’s representatives when meeting with regulatory agencies, such as the EPA, DEC, DOH, OFPC, NCFM, and OSHA. - Evaluates Laboratory activities to ensure they are in compliance with all applicable environmental health and safety regulations. - Trains, directs, and supervises environmental health and safety support staff in the performance of their duties, as required. - Assists with implementing the Laboratory’s hazardous waste programs; ensuring the proper disposal of chemical, biological, and radioactive wastes. Assists with the collecting and processing of all hazardous wastes when required. - Manages outside vendors used for sprinkler system testing and inspections. - Completes registration and maintenance of the AED program and first aid program. - Develops safety policies and procedures and specifies PPE to be worn by all Laboratory staff.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent EH&S-related experience. SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Five years’ experience in environmental health and safety is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license. Capable of operating a forklift. Certification in CPR/First Aid and use of an AED. Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications. Must receive an annual occupational health physical.
