Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Associate Technical Director is a valuable member of our team, who will demonstrate a high degree of technical competence and knowledge in current methods and techniques. This position reports to the Administrative Director, Clinical Pathology. This Molecular Genetics position component is technically supervised by the Head, Molecular Genetics Laboratory. Responsibilities include the administrative and technical day-to-day operations of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory. The Cytogenetics position component is supervised by the Head, Cytogenetics Laboratory. Responsibilities include administrative operations of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.

Duties of a TH Associate Technical Director may include the following but are not limited to:
- Oversee all operations (technical and administrative) of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.
- Oversee administrative operations of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.
- Update and continue to develop a policy and procedure manual based on Federal, State, Local and professional association standards.
- Ensure that all sections of the lab are stocked with sufficient quantities of necessary supplies and reagents to maintain laboratory procedures.
- Ensure that technical staff are thoroughly instructed in procedures and theory behind procedures performed in respective sections of the laboratory.
- To assure accurate functioning and maintenance of equipment.
- Ensure maintenance of and compliance with an acceptable QC program that meets the criteria established by pertinent regulatory agencies.
- Ensure that adequate staffing levels are maintained at all times.
- Oversee staff compliance with all departmental and SBUH Policies and Procedures.
- Maintain the laboratory accreditation of areas, i.e., CAP, NYS DOH, etc. as appropriate
- Coordinate LIS staff training
- Prepare and monitor S&E, PSR and capital equipment budget
- Monitor staff productivity and adjust staff when necessary. Commit to writing detailed requirements for increased staffing (utilize staffing matrix format).
- Administrative projects as assigned.
- Assist in coordination of programs to increase client base to include development of marketing tools.
- Coordinate QA/CQI Programs, including interdepartmental problem resolution.
- Participation on relevant Laboratory Committees and ensures staff adherence with all compliance plans as established.
- Annual evaluations and competencies are performed and documented as per established Human Resources policies and procedures.
- In the event of non-conformance ensures that results are not reported until corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
- Oversees instruction of technical staff, Medical Technology students and pathology residents as assigned in methodologies and principles. Participates in continuing education and in-service education programs.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Biological Science or Life Sciences.
- NYS License as Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- A minimum of 6 years of Clinical Laboratory Technologist experience.
- A minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
- Experience in molecular infectious disease or oncology.
- Performed moderate and high complexity molecular based tests.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communications.
- Competency in computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- A minimum of 3 years Molecular Genetics supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of Cytogenetics.
