![]() Jr. Specialist I- Nephrology - Dr. Chen The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist in general support of molecular, genetic, and biochemical studies related to renal cell biology, metabolic reprogramming, peptide-based therapeutics, and immune checkpoint therapy. Research Activity (90%) The Jr. Specialist will participate in publishable research on the regulation of immune checkpoint proteins in kidney cancer and renal fibrosis. This individual is expected to employ molecular genetic, genomic and biochemical tools to investigate the mechanisms by which metabolic enzymes regulates cell signaling in both renal epithelial cells and kidney cancer cells. The position will involve gene cloning, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knockout, bacterial cell culture, real-time qPCR, cell-based assays, immunochemistry, phospho-RTK array analysis, and measurement of metabolites in kidney tissues. The Jr. Specialist will perform experiments under the supervision of a senior postdoc and the PI. He/she is expected to familiarize himself/herself with the current state of knowledge in the field by reading background literature, including that suggested by supervisors and relevant independent study. The Jr. Specialist is expected to understand the rationale and hypotheses being tested, and to discuss experimental design prior to performing experiments with the supervisors. Once trained, this individual is expected to work independently with basic techniques and protocols. Overall, the Jr. Specialist should work semi-independently, planning his/her own work schedule and experiments, with oversight by the postdoc and PI. He/she will be expected to participate in the design of the experimental plan and individual experiments. Through the above-referenced duties, the Jr. Specialist will outline and draft sections of the manuscript and/or help to edit the manuscript. He/she will organize and summarize final data in graphical and/or tabular form for presentation, publications and grant proposals. The incumbent may be asked to present study findings at lab meeting and/or Nephrology Grand Rounds and Kidney Research Day as well as contribute to poster presentations. Flexible work schedule. Professional Competence (5%) The Jr. Specialist will have the opportunities to attend scientific or scholarly conferences including the ASN Kidney Week and AACR annual meeting. University and Public Service (5%) The Jr. Specialist will be expected to mentor undergraduate researchers. These students would typically help with basic lab tasks and complete small research projects closely related to his/her own research; would be expected to assist with their training and discuss experiments with them. Other responsibilities: Jr. Specialist in the lab will include the development of laboratory protocols, database design, specimen handling and collection, tissue processing, data entry, and maintenance of regulatory requirements. The applicant will also assist all members of the laboratory with maintaining daily functions including ordering of supplies, and lab safety and will be required to perform tasks in compliance with all regulatory agencies/policies including IACUC, PHS, and OHSS. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
