Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned scientific research organization located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking a motivated Senior Safety Specialist to join our Environmental Health & Safety team. The ideal candidate will provide support to scientific staff in the areas of environmental health and safety and emergency response.
Other responsibilities include:
Performs all the essential duties and responsibilities of a safety technician and safety specialist when required.
Assists with regulatory inspections conducted by the EPA, DEC, DOH, OFPC, NCFM, and OSHA.
Provides training in environmental and occupational safety to all members of laboratory staff.
Develops, writes, and implements safety programs to maintain compliance with various regulatory agencies, such as OSHA, EPA, DEC, and DOH.
Identifies and recommends solutions to environmental and occupational hazards at the Laboratory.
Serves as a key member of the Laboratory's emergency response team
Surveys laboratory areas and equipment for hazardous conditions and contamination.
Performs additional tasks and duties as directed by the Director or Manager of Environmental Health and Safety.
Maintains implements and performs environmental and occupational monitoring and dosimetry programs. Specifies and orders safety supplies and equipment.
Schedules EH&S services with outside vendors and directly oversees all hazardous waste disposal operations.
Supervises and directs Hazardous Waste Technician(s).
Performs additional tasks and duties as directed by the Manager(s) and Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
Essential Duties Summary:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent EH&S-related experience. SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Two years' experience in environmental health and safety is preferred. Must have a valid driver. Must be able to occasionally work after hours and on weekends to attend required training, seminars, or respond to hazardous material emergencies. Desirable to have certification in CPR/First Aid and use of an AED.
