Purpose
The FABLAB Director will provide oversight, management, direction, and supervision for the establishment and implementation of programs and activities of the Mott Community College FABLAB located in the Regional Technology Center. This position will report to the Assistant Vice President for Workforce & Economic Development. The Director will work closely with large to small companies, educational organizations and a variety of agencies to identify educational and training needs. The Director will initiate and oversee training and development activities that support existing clients while increasing net revenue via establishing new client relationships. The key expectation is the Director will operate the activities to be revenue generating, not just break even while ensuring that superior customer service is delivered.
Scope
The FABLAB supports product development activities brought by 'clients' (students, community members and/or businesses) who desire to start businesses, take products to market, grow existing businesses and/or expand existing company product portfolios. The Director will support other FABLAB personnel and clients by consulting on the operation of software and equipment; engaging in the manufacture of prototype products; tracking usage, expenditures and revenue; maintaining equipment platforms; working with community partners focused on entrepreneurship and business ownership/expansion; representing Mott as a participant on various community/grant activities and supervising FABLAB Technicians and student interns/workers.
Dimension
The Director will facilitate interaction and coordinate support for interested 'clients' on the design/development of their product ideas. This position may require travel to companies and agencies throughout the college service areas; including but not limited to, Genesee, Shiawassee, Lapeer, and Livingston counties. Customization and delivery of training for offerings delivered to meet the needs of the customer. Maintain and uphold professional standards in all segments of the operation. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings, as needed. Increase the number and type of activities occurring with credit programs.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The FABLAB Director can supervise one (1) part-time FABLAB Technician, one (1) part-time consultant, and two (2) student workers/interns.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a technical or business-related area
- A minimum of three (3) years' experience in a design-related field and demonstrated knowledge of design, fabrication, manufacturing and/or electrical processes and possess demonstrated problem solving expertise.
- Documented project and personnel management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Budget management experience.
- Strategic planning skills.
- Ability to interface and engage a diverse population of individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
