The Association is seeking a qualified individual that is passionate about the electric utility industry to work in governmental affairs for the organization. The individual in this position will work in conjunction with the Vice President, Public Affairs on legislative, regulatory, and political activities in the state. The position is in Montgomery, AL at the Alabama Rural Electric Association building. Reports to Vice President of Public Affairs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Establish and maintain positive relationships with elected and appointed government officials, their staff, and other organizations.
Monitor legislative activity for the association and work with Vice President, Public Affairs as a lobbyist representing the electric utility industry and keep membership informed of on-going activities.
Conduct research concerning the impact of existing and/or proposed legislation and regulations on cooperatives.
Attends industry meetings to monitor topics that relates to the utility industry.
Visit cooperatives to discuss policy activity in the state.
Work with regulatory bodies on rules that will impact electric cooperatives in Alabama.
Assists in the promotion, organization, and planning for accomplishing the goals and objectives of the Electric Cooperative of Alabama Political Action Committee.
Work alongside the VP, Public Affairs, and leadership to identify candidates and legislators for the Electric Cooperatives of Alabama PAC contributions.
Organize legislative reception annually.
Assist with other communication efforts within the association.
Other activities, as from time to time may be assigned.
EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years professional work experience, governmental affairs experience preferred with a general understanding of legislative process, strong networking and relationship building skills, strong written and oral skills, self-starter and positive attitude.
The position includes travel to local, state and potentially national industry meetings, as well as other relevant programs. Strong deference will be given to candidates with prior experience in government relations and/or regulatory work and excellent writing skills. Salary commensurate with experience.
