The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is the national institute on Smart Manufacturing (SM) for the United States. The Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) is the organization within UCLA and administrative home of CESMII, which it operates in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office. CESMII drives innovation in SM through a membership network, education and workforce development program, funded research projects, and a Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform.
Smart Manufacturing is the application of advanced technologies such as sensors, controls, analytics, modeling, and platforms to increase efficiency in manufacturing. CESMII’s mission is to accelerate SM adoption, which will radically impact manufacturing performance through measurable improvements in areas such as quality, throughput, costs/profitability, safety, asset reliability, and energy productivity. By enabling frictionless movement of raw and contextualized data (i.e., information) between real-time operations and the people and systems that create value in and across manufacturing organizations, CESMII is ensuring the power of information and innovation is at the fingertips of everyone who touches manufacturing.
Position Summary
The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovative Institute is looking for a Technical Instructor to educate instructors, students and manufacturing workforce, in the Smart Manufacturing field. The Smart Manufacturing Instructor and Education Manager will develop technical training programs and help instructors and system integrators develop SM skills that will make them better professionals. The instructor will serve as curriculum advisor to other instructors developing Smart Manufacturing education and be required to deliver instructional content periodically to promote the adoption of SM skills and methodologies by manufacturers.
The Smart Manufacturing Instructor and Education Manager must be knowledgeable in the field of Smart Manufacturing and industrial OT to IT integration with solid hands-on experience configuring connectivity from machines and IIoT sensors to PLCs, edge gateways, and cloud platforms. SM education topics include: the value of SM skills for different manufacturing jobs and career paths, and low-cost options for adoption of SM technology by SMMs leading to higher levels of productivity and reduced costs for SM implementations.

3 + years Three plus years applied Smart Manufacturing or industrial automation experience preferred including skills with Python, PLC programming, MQTT, OPC-UA, and ISA95 standards. (Preferred) And
3 years Proven experience as instructional designer and technical trainer (Required)
Excellent communicator, able to explain complex subjects in a clear and interesting manner (Required)
Collaborate with a wide range of educational partners and vendors working with CESMII on revenue programs with educational resources. (Required)
Advance working knowledge of MS Office applications including Powerpoint, Word, and Excel. (Required)
Strong design, demonstration, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with industrial data acquisition, edge gateways, integration of manufacturing systems and cloud pIIoT/SM platforms. (Required)
Experience demonstrating the ability to handle multiple tasks frequently with short timelines, to prioritize and organize work and to complete assignments in a timely, accurate manner. Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently or as a team member, with minimal direction (Required)
Thorough knowledge of functional area and understands how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses or in other areas. (Required)
Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills (Required)
Ability to work in a start-up environment, and juggle multiple tasks in support of organizational objectives. (Required)
Advanced level skills in application of planning, resourcing and monitoring of effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization. (Required)

50% CESMII runs education programs and events across the US. Position will include travel to support industry and regional events with partners and collaborators like SMICs and MEPs for activities including (i) in-person education/instruction, (ii) facilitation of in-person round tables and regional community discussions, and (iii) visits to education partners to assess and advise on SM technology used for education.
