This is a full-time position with benefits including health, vision, dental, short-term disability and life insurance, 401K matching, 16 holiday days annually, and the week between Christmas and New Year's Day off. Employees earn up to 16 days of PTO annually with additional opportunity for accrual based on length of employment. The GHBA office is located in Jersey Village, Texas and our team regularly supports events throughout the 11-county region that GHBA serves. Work will primarily be in the GHBA office. Our staff works from home most Fridays and full-time employees also receive two additional flex work-from-home days every month.
The Director of Government Affairs coordinates and executes the government affairs program for the association and communicates issues and concerns to members and the public on matters that affect the industry. The Director of Government Affairs brings together individuals to build trusted relationships in the home building industry through strategic internal and external communications, community partnerships, and proactive policy and political advocacy on behalf of the association. The Greater Houston Builders Association, the state’s largest local home builders association and third largest in the nation, seeks a detail-oriented, passionate, communications professional, who desires a fast-paced work environment. The Director of Government Affairs oversees two team members and works with committed staff, association members, and volunteers to create regulatory and advocacy resources and respond to the needs of elected officials, to help further the mission and vision of the GHBA and enhance housing opportunities in our 11-county region.
This job requires attendance at some community, political and GHBA events outside the normal workday hours. Some travel outside of the Houston-area is required.
Duties, Responsibilities and Authorities:
Develops and maintains effective lines of communication with local, state and national public officials regarding issues that impact the industry and association.
Develops and maintains effective relationships with staff of governmental entities, regulatory agencies and other bodies to enhance the industry’s advocacy and collaboration on issues.
Coordinates, promotes, and participates in meetings held with government leaders and political candidates to advance the objectives of the association.
Provides primary staff support to the Government Affairs Committee, HOME-PAC, Codes and Standards, Volume Builders Committee, Developers Council and other committees and task forces as assigned by the Executive Officer.
Attends and participates in government and community meetings and reports to the members any issues affecting the industry.
Obtains proposed legislation and regulations for analysis and recommendations.
Obtains relevant information on state and national issues and distributes to the committee and membership.
Establishes and maintains a network of members to assist on critical legislative and regulatory issues.
Establishes and maintains relationships with other groups and organizations and serves as a liaison between the local, state and national associations on public policy issues.
Maintains information files on issues and disseminates information to members as necessary.
Contributes articles on government affairs issues to association publications.
Provides legislative and regulatory updates to councils and committees within the GHBA.
Manages and mentors Government Affairs Department team members.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Officer.
