About Washington University School of Medicine Cochlear Implant Program
Program Description:
The Cochlear Implant and Aural Rehabilitation Division at WUSM provides comprehensive cochlear implant services for the adult population. The services include evaluation for cochlear implantation, cochlear implant programming, and aural rehabilitation. The programming and therapy regimen has evolved over the last 14 years and has been strongly influenced by clinical research findings. Each cochlear implant recipient participates in weekly programming and aural rehabilitation sessions over approximately 16-weeks. The programming of the implant is typically completed in the first six to eight weeks, but re-checked every few weeks. In addition, audiologists provide hearing aid evaluation and programming for cochlear implant candidates and bimodal fittings. There is an opportunity to participate in clinical research. Currently, several longitudinal projects are ongoing as well as short-term research projects.
Students should learn during their clinical externship:
Evaluate individuals for cochlear implant candidacy
Pre-operative counseling of expectations for performance with a cochlear implant, for pre-lingual and post-lingual individuals
Comprehen...sive knowledge of cochlear implant system equipment
Comprehensive knowledge of programming cochlear implants
Planning and execution of aural rehabilitation throughout the cochlear implant process for individuals with and without open-set understanding
Clinical and research testing of individuals speech understanding using a variety of evaluation measures in both quiet and noise including: Soundfield thresholds, HINT sentences, AzBio sentences, BKB-SIN, R-Space, Localization
Hearing aid evaluations and programming using real-ear measures
