The ideal candidate for this position wants a comprehensive experience in audiology but is most interested in learning about tinnitus and sound sensitivity evaluation and management. This placement will be completed at the Koss Hearing and Balance Center, located at Froedtert Hospital.
Please note focus is subject to change based on individual student experience and education, as well as contract between Froedtert Hospital, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the student's university. All audiologist's hold their CCC's and WI Audiology License.
Approximately 50% of externship is Tinnitus/Sound Sensitivity Evaluation, Assessment & Management
Ultra high frequency audiometry
Comprehensive history review and interview
Review and interpreting questionnaire
Identifying underlying causes of tinnitus/sound sensitivity
Identify bothered vs non-bothersome tinnitus
Identifying when further medical workup/management is warranted
Diagnosing various types of tinnitus: somatic, pulsatile vs non-pulsatile, objective vs subjective
Diagnosing various forms of sound sensitivity: hyperacusis, misophonia and reactive tinnitus
Implementing a comprehensive sound therapy program
Appropriately fitting amplification, sound generator and combination devices for tinnitus and sound sensitivity
Counseling patient on causes of tinnitus, pathophysiology of tinnitus, management options, realistic expectations
Counseling and treatment plans on common tinnitus related issues: sleep disturbance, focus/concentration, emotional distress, hearing loss, sound sensitivity
Familiarity with various tinnitus management options: sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques
Identifying which management options are best for each individual patient
Familiarity with implementing a treatment plan in presence of multiple tinnitus related issues
Continued follow up as needed with patient

Over the course of the year, we expect the extern to become proficient and independent at performance of comprehensive hearing and vestibular assessments. Competent in hearing aid selection/evaluation, consultation, dispensing/fitting, verification and validation, troubleshooting and programming. Additionally, the student will gain confidence in tinnitus evaluation and basic tinnitus management and counseling and evoked potentials (VEMP, ABR, ECoG, ASSR). Student will also have experience with cochlear implant and osseointegrated devices.

Applicants should have a diverse range of clinical practicum experiences and should be comfortable with basic audiometric testing and history taking. Basic understanding of hearing aids. Demonstrate good communication skills. Students should have a high level of motivation, professionalism and willingness to learn.

Complete an affiliation agreement with Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. Assist student in meeting and providing proof of requirements: both malpractice insurance and general liability insurance, Flu/MMR/Covid19 vaccines, TB negative test, as appropriate.
University must complete an affiliation agreement. Provide preceptor with appropriate required paperwork and dead lines. Be available to communicate about student's progress, attendance, skills, participation, etc.
Student must have both malpractice insurance and general liability insurance. Student must submit and pass a background check and drug screen. Student must have influenza, Covid19 & MMR vaccines and negative TB test. Student must follow HIPAA and patient privacy policies.
