Senior Vice President, General Counsel

Overview: Reporting to the Chairman and CEO of Schnitzer, the General Counsel is the chief legal officer responsible for directing all legal activities of the Company. The General Counsel is also a key business partner to the executive management team and acts as Corporate Secretary of the Board of Directors. S/he will be expected to contribute to the management of the Company, bringing to bear both legal and business expertise deriving from a thorough understanding of the Company’s operations and strategic goals.

Through Schnitzer’s integrated operating platform, the Company processes scrap metal and  manufactures finished steel products from our own scrap metal. Properly handled, scrap metal is a continuous and valuable resource that can be re-melted and reshaped into new products countless times while providing significant economic and environmental benefits as compared to virgin materials. Schnitzer recycles metals ranging from iron and steel to aluminum, copper, lead, stainless steel, and zinc.

Location: US headquarters are located in Portland, OR. A hybrid remote work arrangement is possible but the individual should reside in or re-locate to Northern California, including San Francisco, the Greater Oakland area, and Silicon Valley or Seattle, WA.

Experience: The successful candidate will have at least 20 years of legal experience and a deep background handling corporate and public company governance and compliance matters, environmental and other regulatory matters, M&A, business law, including international, and general litigation matters. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated strong leadership skills and management experience as well as a proven track record of effectively handling a company’s global legal function. In-house experience is required, ideally serving as General Counsel of a similar-sized or larger publicly-held company. Exposure to and experience working in an industry where environmental issues are prevalent is a strong plus.
