This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time Seed Analyst 1 positions at Oregon State University (OSU).
OSU Seed Laboratory exists to provide quality control information to the seed industry for purposes of marketing and shipping. Seed testing for the Oregon Seed Certification Service is conducted through this laboratory. The laboratory serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other government agencies by conducting regulatory testing and provides technical support to OSU and to the general public in numerous ways. Technical training in the form of seed schools and workshops is provided to various groups in Oregon, other states and countries. The OSU Seed Laboratory enjoys national and international acclaim as a leader in seed testing procedures.
This position is responsible for independently conducting the final analysis of the purity subsample on the most common grass species, tall fescue, ryegrass, orchardgrass, fine fescues, and other less complex species. This involves visually examining the sample, which may have been separated by the entry-level employee, making corrections as needed, recording purity results based on pure seed, other seeds, inert matter, noxious and prohibited weed seeds.
This position is to function as part of a team designated to train new student, temporary and classified employees to conduct the initial separation on the easiest species in preparation for purity or germination testing.
One year of full-time experience performing purity, germination, or special tests on seeds such as Bluegrass and Bentgrass seeds and training providing the knowledge of AOSA or SCST rules for testing seeds; OR a certificate of competency in seed testing from either AOSA or SCST.
Excellent vision, hand/eye coordination.
Incumbent will be expected to sit or stand at a work station for extended periods of time and occasionally carry and lift trays of seed samples up to 20 lbs. Must be able to perform repetitive motions
Analysts will spend the majority of their time in a sitting position looking at seeds using magnification and forceps to manipulate seeds. Some work will be performed operating equipment to separate seeds and will require some sitting, standing and lifting (<20lbs). Occasionally, special projects may require some outdoor work.
This position occasionally involves working around fumes, odors, dust, noise, and pesticide chemicals.
