A partial year career appointment is established to accommodate foreseeable seasonal fluctuations in staffing and contains a regularly pre-scheduled non-work period during which the incumbent remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work. The Health Communications Specialist's non-work period is for 4 weeks during the summer and is unpaid time off.

Dept Marketing Statement UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services is a full-service medical facility offering a complex integration of primary care, counseling and psychiatric services to students on the UCSC campus. This includes a primary care clinic, same day clinic, counseling, psychiatry, high complexity laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, optometry, billing and insurance as well as other administrative functions. Student Health Services also encompasses SHOP, the Student Health Education and Outreach Program and CARE: Advocate Office for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Misconduct, the confidential advocacy support for survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. UCSC Student Health Services strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. Student Health Services (SHS) values staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.
The Health Communication Specialist reports to the AVC of Student Health and Wellness and is responsible for leading and coordinating health education, marketing and communication efforts for Student Health Services (SHS). Using skills as a seasoned, experienced marketing professional, with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures, the Health Communication Specialist will use a wide variety of media, focused on web-based programs and social media to effectively communicate the vision of the leadership of SHS.
The Health Communication Specialist will support SHS staff by developing patient education materials appropriate for primary care needs. This position will develop campus-wide campaigns and presentations and liaison with other campus marketing and communication staff as needed to facilitate collaborative and consistent messaging.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Salary Information: $5,525 - $6, 083 per month for 11 months. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
JOB DUTIES 50% - Website Content Management and Development
Writes and edits website content using consistent messaging for Student Health Services.
Proposes user-friendly improvements to websites and patient portal.
Manages the SHS websites using the campus content management system.
Designs or procures graphics, banners, buttons and other web imagery.
Works closely with medical leadership and staff to post urgent health-related notices (COVID-19, etc.).
Manages web site migrations, as needed.
50% - Communications, Marketing and Outreach
Develops, implements and evaluates marketing and communications strategies and campaigns to promote health behaviors or respond to health problems.
Designs and develops digital and print outreach materials, such as social media posts, flyers, postcards, etc.
Collaborates with cross-campus marketing, communication, and outreach staff to maximize messaging and outreach and to ensure that messaging is coordinated and consistent.
Assists in the development of health education materials and media for Student Health Services.
Proactively researches trends and best practices in student-oriented or youth-oriented communications.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Experience with website content management systems, basic HTML, and web analytics
Demonstrated writing ability and content creation skills for web pages, print media, infographics and social media
Ability to communicate complicated medical or technical concepts using accessible, student-friendly language
Experience communicating health-related material
Effective interpersonal skills to interact with diverse stakeholders, including medical staff, technical staff, and leadership
Effective organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate stakeholder needs
Ability to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs
Ability to assess and gain understanding of the user experience (UX) applying known principles and best practices
Knowledge of best practices for communications during disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, norovirus, etc.
Prior to formal offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Selected Candidate will be required to take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire
Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years
Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview
Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours
