This legal position within the Office of General Counsel will be responsible to provide legal and commercial counsel for a VSP line of business and/or staff group. This position will support a line of business and/or staff group and its respective senior management teams.
Evaluates and manages legal impact of LOB and/or staff group's major business and commercial decisions and/or plans.
Provides guidance on daily commercial legal matters relevant to the business and/or staff group.
Provides guidance and recommendations to business and/or staff partners on appropriate current and pending legislation.
Provide counsel on commercial-related disputes, including managing external counsel where appropriate and coordinating with appropriate internal teams to defend such matters.
Ensures the company's management policies and programs are consistently practiced.
Negotiate commercial contracts with external partner industry vendors to support the LOB and its business strategy.
Typically has the following skills or abilities:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
Five to seven years legal experience in a corporate environment or equivalent, specializing in and general business matters and/or matters relevant to supported staff group
Current license to practice law in the State of New York desirable, but ability to qualify for a license under New York's Registered In-House Counsel Program will be considered
Demonstrated ability to participate in high-level company-wide planning and strategy efforts
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent written, verbal, research and communication skills
Interpersonal and self-management skills to build and maintain strong relationships with relevant business and/or staff groups within the company
Ability to work with a team of diverse individuals; ability to work collaboratively
Excellent judgment and ability to assess risks; ability to protect the company's interests; keen business acumen
Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally with all levels of management regarding complex legal issues
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities and deadlines and work with various stakeholders
Experience with commercial contracts; intellectual property licensing, procurement and enforcement; general labor and employment matters; marketing/advertising regulations; and other general corporate matters for both US and non-US companies.
Experience dealing directly with operational leads as well as executive management.
Experience with regulatory agencies such as FDA, customs, etc. a plus.
The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust etc.
