The Radiation Safety Specialist serves as a Health Physicist in the Radiation Safety program and assists in the implementation and management of specific programs within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's radiation safety program. This position is responsible for maintaining the data and operations to maintain an accurate inventory of radioactive materials on the university campuses from receipt to off-site disposal of waste. The position will track and execute instrument calibrations for radiation detectors used by the campuses. In addition, this position also performs other aspects of the radiation safety program including auditing campus laboratories, facilities, and/or equipment to assess safety and compliance with regulatory requirements and university licensing. This could include evaluating X-ray producing equipment, radioactive sealed sources, and performing surveys to assess radiation contamination or radiation exposure rates. This position also shares 24-hour emergency on-call and response duties.
