The Food Service Worker position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Nutrition and Food Service at the Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks (VHSO). The position sanitizes work spaces and cooking utensils. Also, prepares and serves food to the entire inpatient population of the VHSO. Participates in the set-up of serving areas; assembles plates, trays, cafeteria lines, etc.; portions and serves food. Sets up food or drink serving stations. Follows direct and specific instructions to assist in setting up food service area, replenishing condiments, dishes or utensils, or placing individual food items in serving trays or serving dishes for serving line. Performs Limited Food Preparation and Stocks Service Line: Prepares coffee, washes, peels, chops, cuts and dices food as instructed. Bags bread. Portions ready-to-serve food into serving dishes and replenishes as instructed. Sets up glasses, silverware, butter, condiments, salads, desserts, bread and hot and cold beverages on trays as instructed. Loads Tray Carts and Delivers Meals: Loads trays onto tray carts as instructed. Carefully pushes tray carts to rooms and carries trays into rooms as instructed. Carries trays to tables for patients or customers needing assistance. Follows Specific Instruction to Store and Handle Food: Assists in covering and dating foods. Follows specific instruction from a higher graded worker. Assist in storing food. Carries covered and dated food to storage area, refrigerator, or freezer as instructed. Assists in rotating inventory. Moves covered and stored food for easy access, as instructed. Cleans food service or preparation facility or equipment. Position is designated to perform proper operation of dish machine. Consistently uses "Foam In -Foam Out" procedure when passing trays to patients. Disassembles, cleans, sanitizes, assembles, and stores a variety of cooking, baking, meat cutting, or miscellaneous food service equipment. Follows the specific instructions of a higher graded worker or the supervisor to clean floors, counters, tables or other work areas. Follows standard sanitation practices. Supervisor or higher graded worker is available to answer questions and check work. Cleans Dining Area: Cleans dining room tables as instructed. As instructed, clears dishes, silverware or glassware from tables or trays. Wipes tables or trays. Removes trash from tables or trays. Cleans dining room walls and ceilings; sweeps and mops floors; washes windows as instructed. Cleans Work Areas: Cleans food preparation and serving facilities as instructed. Thoroughly cleans food preparation and food service work surfaces as instructed. Cleans and sanitizes trashcans. Cleans walls and ceilings; sweeps and mops floors in work areas as instructed. Performs other related food service duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Sunday; 6 AM - 2:30 PM and 10:30 am - 6:30 PM; subject to change based on the needs of the agency. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. May be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
