Under general supervision, the Transplant Recovery Specialist provides coordination of all activities involved with the surgical removal, preservation, packaging, and transportation of organs recovered for transplant. Independently responsible for intraoperative organ preservation and packaging of organs. Provides organ-specific intraoperative organ preservation and packaging for local and distant cases. Provides preservation, first-assist and packaging support to local organ recovery teams on non-local organ recoveries. Manages and monitors organs for transplant on mechanical preservation devices.
The Transplant Recovery Specialist may facilitate acceptance or refusal of donor organs for transplant. This person may coordinate the organ recovery process with the transplant surgeons, organ and tissue donation team, histocompatibility lab and communicates effectively with patients receiving the organ. May be required to complete regulatory required forms and data collection. Participates in on-call rotation and community outreach events.
Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have applicable certification/licensure as surgical tech, EMT, or LVN.
One to two (1 - 2) years of experience as a surgical technician, EMT or LVN (with applicable certification or licensure).
Proven ability to safely and accurately prepare and administer medications and fluids used for organ preservation.
Ability to use air transportation; fixed-wing and helicopter.
Demonstrated ability to work with cadaveric donors. Proficient in aseptic and sterile techniques.
Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Previous OPO Surgical Recovery experience.
