The Director of Transportation is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the CFO/COO. This position's primary duty is to provide leadership and strategic direction for the school bus transportation operation consisting of approximately 35 school bus drivers, a team of maintenance mechanics, and transportation administrative staff, while also ensuring a safe bus operation consisting of approximately 60 vehicles. The department provides busing during the academic year and for summer programs. The goal of the department is to ensure professional, safe, reliable, customer-focused and timely school bus service to the families and employees of the school.
Provide strategic direction and leadership to establish operating parameters, ensure sufficient resources, and motivate high performance within the department.
Manage the day to day school bus operations including, but not limited to, personnel management and retention, scheduling, routing, daily provision of services, and customer service.
Hire, develop, train and manage department employees; ensure highest levels of employee performance.
Meet regularly with the transportation team and promote department professionalism, employee motivation, quality service, and teamwork.
Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures; ensure and document compliance with Federal and State regulations.
Strategize, manage, and continually optimize transportation operations, including but not limited to processes, software, and routing.
Prepare and manage transportation operating budget, capital improvements as needed, and multi-year plans for expenditures.
Work across departments, including athletics, academic divisions, security, and facilities, to ensure a coordinated approach to busing for interscholastic activities, trips, and other events.
Analyze outside variables that impact the safe transportation of students to and from school; prioritize issues accordingly.
Meet regularly with the CFO/COO or his/her designee to ensure timely communication of department performance, analysis of issues, and ongoing strategic planning.
Collaborate with CFO/COO or his/her designee to develop and execute plans that mitigate traffic in the adjoining neighborhood.
Provide adequate supervision for the fleet during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
Oversee Department’s coordination of weekly driver assignments, proper documentation of payroll hours and runs, and effective communication with drivers.
Ensure the department is maintaining current student, parent, and driver data in the school-wide database(s), accurately tracking daily change requests, and timely response to bus service inquiries.
Conduct job responsibilities consistent with the values and mission of the school.
Demonstrate strong customer service skills.
Oversee a safe and secure working environment for all transportation employees.
Grow and develop departmental leadership with thought to future succession planning.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree and experience with Department of Transportation requirements preferred.
At least five (5) years of management experience in transportation or logistics, preferably in an educational environment.
Strong people skills required as this position demands speaking courteously with parents, students, school and bus driver staff.
Superior analytic and problem-solving skills, working in and through a broad range of internal, external and regulatory variables.
Excellent oral and written communication skills required, maintaining open channels and exemplifying strong customer service skills.
Ability to maintain sensitive family and personnel information in the strictest of confidence, exercising absolute discretion and professionalism.
Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high impact, results-driven environment.
Strong time management skills with the capability to manage many tasks and projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and maintaining quality work output.
Maintains a focused attention to detail.
A CDL driver’s license is a plus but not a requirement.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and database programs required. Experience with Tyler Technology system, SchoolPass, and Veracross information system is a plus.
