Job Description Under general direction this position is supervised by the Associate Director for International Students and Scholars Center (ISSC) working in the international scholar area. Advise department representatives on appropriate immigration statuses for various ASU positions. Determine foreign national’s eligibility for a given immigration status. Coordinate, prepare, attest, and file U.S. employment-based immigration petitions for foreign national employees on behalf of ASU hiring departments. Act as interface with a variety of federal agencies including, but not limited to: U.S. Department of Labor, Department of Homeland Security, Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and associated units of US Department of State to ensure timely response and compliance with all requests, requirements and regulations. The advisor ensures compliance through knowledge and understanding of, and adherence to all applicable federal residency and nonimmigrant visa regulations, as well as university policy. - Maintain expert knowledge of federal government regulations related to foreign national hiring (including but not limited to H-1B, TN, E-3, O-1, and Permanent Residency).
- Maintain sufficient knowledge of immigration statuses, i.e. J, F, and B, that may impact foreign national’s employment eligibility.
- Work closely with Associate Director for interpretation of immigration regulations including but not limited to H-1B, TN, E-3, O-1, and permanent residency to ensure proper understanding and application.
- Maintain internal business policies and procedures to ensure that employment-based immigrant and non-immigrant petitions are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Work closely and collaboratively with other office colleagues to ensure consistent protocol regarding employment-based immigration programs policies and procedures.
- Monitor regulatory updates and apply necessary changes to operations, forms, website, and advising practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Research, respond, and resolve issues affecting ISSC service delivery in assigned area of responsibility; develop and present recommendations to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the department.
- Coordinate responses to communications related to immigration processes and transactions from academic units, scholars, and temporary workers, government agencies and the community at large to ensure timely availability of information.
- As requested/required, assist International Students and Scholars Center (ISSC) leadership with special projects and other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year of experience advising on immigration matters in a high-volume international office in higher education setting, and preparing and filing employment-based non-immigrant/immigrant petitions OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Federal regulations require that the incumbent be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident for processing of immigration petitions. Desired Qualifications - At least two (2) years of experience working with employment based immigration statuses and regulations.
- Experience in working with faculty, scholars, staff in a higher education/university international faculty and scholars’ program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. immigration regulations as they pertain to university faculty, scholars, and students including SEVIS.
- Experience in using Sunapsis software (or similar electronic tracking programs) for tracking international students and scholars.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of record retention and archival standards.
- Evidence of effective communication skills.
- Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a diversified population.
- Experience in problem resolution.
- Experience in customer service
- Experience in working collaboratively with a broad and diverse range of colleagues, constituents and stakeholders with potentially conflicting expectations and needs.
Working Environment Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (45%); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (30%) Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (20%) Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
