Participates as a member of various committees, teams and councils for Advent Health Gordon, as may be assigned.
- Ensures accurate and timely completion of staff initial training competencies and on-going annual competencies as directed by regulatory agencies.
- Serves as a technical resource for staff and other hospital caregivers.
- Collaborates with the Director of Laboratory Services, Medical Director, and Hospital Administration to maintain necessary and clinically effective testing, products, services, and instrumentation/equipment. Introduces new tests, processes and instrumentation/equipment which may include recommendation, selection, evaluation, cost analysis, change management, and education.
- Assists in the preparation and management of the Laboratory operating budget in collaboration with the Director of Laboratory Services to ensure the availability of appropriate staffing, professional development, space, supplies, and equipment, necessary for improving and maintaining the quality of services.
- Develops and/or oversees development of new policies, procedures, or processes in the document control system. Ensures that policies are reviewed at specific intervals and meet regulatory requirements.
- Supervises, manages, assigns and/or performs all pre-analytical and support activities related to department operations. Activities may include general and analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation; inventory control and supply stocking; specimen collection; biological specimen processing; cleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment and spaces; quality control and calibration performance; answering the telephone, clerical and/or receptionist duties; and other pre-analytical activities.
- Manages, supervises, assigns and/or performs all testing and analytical procedures for assigned department or work area. Ensures staff performance in proficiency testing, consistently adhering to federal and state regulations as well as Florida Hospital policies. Consistently ensures department workspaces are maintained in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner, and that documentation is complete, properly stored and safeguarded.
- Performs, assigns and manages assigned post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, in accordance with policies, procedures and facility practices. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients.
- Directs department staffing within allocated budgeted hours, including interviewing and final recommendation to the Director of Laboratory Services for selection of new staff members, ensuring appropriate orientation of new employees, ongoing training of staff, and documented competency assessment of staff.
- Supervises, manages, leads, engages and mentor’s department staff. Provides resolution to complex customer service issues by utilizing professional, mature judgment. Provides education to department staff, hospital clinical staff and hospital support staff as appropriate or requested. Facilitates workflow.
- Actively leads and participates in laboratory Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of new equipment and/or procedures or methods. Actively promotes team building and employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and a culture of safety for employees and patients. Utilizes knowledge of hospital Performance Improvement activities and strategic goals.
- Follows and ensures adherence of staff, to the Advent Health Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all-times.
- Follows and enforces appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Enforces and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Represents the laboratory in either a leadership or technical role at organizational multidisciplinary or leadership meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or work area, including fulfilling the Director of Laboratory Services responsibilities in their absence.
Qualifications
What You Will Need: - Knowledge of applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, rules and guidelines, such as JCAHO, DNV, CLIA, OSHA, or other state or regulatory related agencies, as well as the Advent Health Corporate Compliance Plan
- A high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise of analytical testing in licensed specialty(ies), with ability to share, explain, teach, and mentor others
- Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner
- Ability to read text and numbers in English, and comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve
- Ability to apply accurately learned computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
- Mature, independent professional judgment and leadership of team and the ability to handle confidential information within Advent Health guidelines and applicable regulations
- Ability to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations and handle multiple priorities and projects

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: - Associate of Science or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science or medical technology/laboratory science
- 2 to 5 Years of Position-Related Experience
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: - Certification as a Medical Technologist through ASCP, NCA, AMT, AAB or any other nationally recognized certification agency.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Manager provides technical expertise and clinical support to Advent Health Gordon and functions as a representative of the facility across all system laboratories through collaboration, standardization, integration and oversight of related services. Develops and maintains all policies, procedures, processes, various documents, and quality assurance program applicable to specialty. In concert with and under direction of the Medical Director and Director of Laboratory Services, ensures that necessary clinically effective testing, products and services are offered and introduces new tests, procedures and instrumentation as required, including test or instrument evaluation, selection and/or recommendation. Participates in System Team Meetings as assigned. Supervises, designs, assigns and/or performs all aspects (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical) of laboratory testing and procedures; quality control process; performance improvement activities; interviewing and final recommendation of new staff members to the Director of Laboratory Services; ensuring training of new employees; ongoing competency assessment of staff; advanced problem solving for customers and staff; departmental equipment operation, maintenance and upgrades; writing/ reviewing procedures and processes. Actively manages daily operations of laboratory/specialty, within approved operational and capital budgets, meeting departmental goals in accordance with Advent Health Gordon mission, vision, and values. Work customarily involves supervision of analytical testing of blood and/or other biological specimens.
