The Sterile Processing Technician II performs routine maintenance and preparation of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment requiring cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, package, testing, sterilization and/or high-level disinfection in a medical facility, as well as all other duties performed by the Sterile Processing Technician I. This is the second level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the lower level by increased knowledge and responsibility in all functions of Sterile Processing. Employees in this level may be in training to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Technician III, specifically in the role of a back-up Lead and/or Trainer for newly-hired staff. Cleaning and Decontamination: Sorts, cleans and decontaminates soiled instruments and flexible endoscopes by utilizing proper manual and mechanical techniques. Cleans and decontaminates and tests medical techniques. Cleans and decontaminates and tests medical equipment for proper operation. Staging, Inspection, Assembly and Packaging of Instruments: Sorts clean instruments, instrument sets of flexible endoscopes by type. Inspections and tests for proper function. Assembles them according to quantity based on a count sheet generated by the instruments tracking system. Packages or places them in a rigid container for sterilization or a transport bin for distribution after high-level disinfection and/or just-in-time sterilization. Sterilization and/or High-Level Disinfection: Prepares and arranges all assembled instruments, instrument set, or flexible endoscopes for steam sterilization, low temperature sterilization, just-in-time sterilization, or high-level disinfection based on manufacturer's instruction-for-use. Initiates and completes all necessary sterilization documentation. l Performs routine testing and maintenance of all sterilization and high-level disinfection equipment. Inventory Control and Distribution: Checks stocks of supplies on an ongoing basis to ensure sufficient inventory. Maintains inventory records. Maintains computer-based record of instrument sets decontaminated, assembled, dispensed and to whom. Restocks specialty carts for the Operating Rooms. Practices the First In-First Out (FIFO) method of stocking and distributing supplies. Answers all Operating Rooms calls for supplies and instrument sets. Transports and picks up sterile and non-sterile instruments. Picks case carts for all Operating Room cases, including supplies and sterile instruments and other items based on a surgeon's procedure card. Miscellaneous: May function in the role of a Lead Technician with the Main Lead or in the absence of the Main Lead. May also function as a resource or a trainer for newly-hired staff or staff rotating in certain skills.
