Job Description:

The Safety Specialist will act as a safety support liaison to campus research labs and associated faculty and lab personnel. The Safety Specialist conducts safety performance reviews and lab hazard assessments for University research laboratories and applicable research support facilities. The Safety Specialist prepares and provides timely safety review reports and assists in and monitors corrective actions, as necessary. The Safety Specialist will advise Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on safety review findings, and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse environment are essential. The Safety Specialist must be able to develop and maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with researchers and other University support personnel while actively promoting a culture of safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or other relevant field; 3+ years of relevant research support or safety experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

Education: MS in Biology or other STEM related field.
Experience:

  • Lab management and safety management experience in a University research laboratory.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  • OSHA 40 Hour Hazardous Materials Technician certification.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of policies and procedures at the University of Texas at Dallas.
