Why Work at BNL? Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
The successful candidate will join the Basic Energy Sciences (BES) group in the Biology Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The BES Plant Science group focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of biochemical processes that underlie the conversion of photosynthetically fixed carbon into desired storage compounds.
The Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory invites applications for a 1-year term Postdoctoral Research Associate position (with annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding). The research will focus on the elucidation of regulatory mechanisms controlling lipid metabolism and storage by a combination of biochemical, genetic, cell biological and physiological approaches. The project will involve the characterization of novel lipid mutants and the study of new protein components involved in the regulation of fatty acid storage and lipid homeostasis in Arabidopsis. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Design and carry out experiments relevant to the research project.
Analyze experimental data and write manuscripts.
Present research results in domestic and international conferences.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in any of the following: Plant Biology, Bioscience or related field.
Demonstrated experience in the standard techniques of molecular biology.
A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Attention to detail and data-driven decision making.
Research experience with land plants or photosynthetic microorganisms.
Experiment design and statistical analysis skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with plant lipid and fatty acid analysis.
Prior experience with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and thin layer chromatography.
Prior experience with fluorescence and Confocal microscopy.
Advanced knowledge of plant lipid metabolism.
Review of applications begins immediately. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Initial 1-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on satisfactory performance and funding.
Research under the direction of Dr. Changcheng Xu.
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
