Department: Univ Athletics-Training Rm Salary/Grade: EXS/7 Job Summary: The Assistant Director of Performance Nutrition reports to the Director of Performance Nutrition and provides nutrition services and leadership to the Performance Nutrition program. This program includes the clinical, food service and education/outreach services provided to optimize the health and performance of student athletes. Primary responsibilities include individual nutrition counseling; team education; leading internship and work-study programming; serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, athletic trainers, and sports performance staff; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Please note: Willingness and ability to work non-traditional schedule including early morning, evenings, weekends and holidays. Travel required. Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA. Specific Responsibilities: Individual Nutrition Counseling - Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
- Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
- Provide personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health.
- Develop and counsel regarding hydration protocols.
- Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
- Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury.
- Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine teams for conditions such as disordered eating.
- Evaluate dietary supplements under the guidelines of the NUDAR policy.
- Develop resources to support educational efforts.
- Document nutrition services provided and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes.
Nutrition Education for Teams, Groups, or Wellness Programs - Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance.
- Recommend appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual team practice, and competition.
- Educate regarding food selection (grocery store tours, food storage) and food preparation (cooking classes)
- Serve as a nutrition resource for coaches, sports performance staff, athletic trainers, food service personnel, and parents.
Food Service and Menu Development - Collaborate with food service provider to develop and manage team meal menus and catering.
- Coordinate nutrition for team travel (catering, hotels, airlines, competition)
- Develop and deliver nutrition education for food service personnel.
- Oversee the fueling stations and ensure compliance with Evanston Health department rules and regulations.
Leadership - Collaborate with the Director of Performance Nutrition to develop the strategic plan for the program, which includes setting short- and long-term goals, monitoring team performance and reporting on metrics.
- Lead and develop the dietetic internship, work study and volunteer programs.
- Lead the Performance Nutrition Ambassador Program,
- Remain current with the latest performance nutrition scientific research and translating this to policy and practice
- Assist in Developing Policies and Processes. Ensuring quality and consistency in clinical, food service, and education programming through training and quality management studies.
Professional Development - Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
- Develop and implement an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and development programs.
- Stay current on food, nutrition, and health issues including research related to sports nutrition.
Miscellaneous - Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: - Registered dietitian (with active registration through Commission in Dietetic Registration) and ability to obtain Illinois State RD Licensure within 3 months of date of hire.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in creating and maintaining nutrition care plans for athletes
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred.
- Compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
- Communicates effectively one-to-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts; writes precise, well-organized emails, letters and proposals while using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with culturally diverse students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master’s degree in nutrition, exercise physiology, or related field.
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Big Ten Conference preferred.
