Essential Functions: Two postdoctoral fellowships are available in the Translational Laboratories of the Perinatology Research Branch (PRB). Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to work in the Maternal-Fetal Immunobiology Unit of the PRB of NICHD/NIH/DHHS and Wayne State University. The Maternal-Fetal Immunobiology Unit of the PRB has unique translational programs focused on the immune mechanisms of disease responsible for pregnancy complications. The PRB is located at Hutzel Women's Hospital, which serves Southeastern MI as the primary obstetrical care center for the DMC, an affiliate of WSU. The Maternal-Fetal Immunobiology Unit is based in Hutzel Women's Hospital as well as in the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, a free-standing facility devoted to basic and translational research in reproduction.Postdoctoral Fellows will participate in studies investigating immunological pathways that lead to obstetrical disorders, whose goals aim to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of disease and to develop methods for the early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pregnancy complications, emphasizing spontaneous preterm labor and birth.The Post Doc Fellow positions will provide those who have completed a doctoral degree in the past 6 years, with a full-time program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the guidance of a supervising Faculty Mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are designed to develop the Postdoctoral Scholar/Fellow as an independent scientist and to enhance their professional skills. Postdoctoral Scholars/Fellows are considered to be in training for future faculty teaching/ research positions or for a position suited to their desired career outcomes and recognized for their dual status as trainees and employees. Postdoctoral Scholars/Fellows provide leadership in the design and management of research programs. Assist the Faculty Mentor in designing protocols and supervising technical staff to complete research projects. With the assistance of the Faculty Mentor, write research proposals with the goal of obtaining additional funding. Conduct research which may result in scholarly publications and presentations for research funding at scientific meetings. Complete technical laboratory and/or field experimental procedures. Coordinate correspondence with collaborators and maintain a system to track progress of research proposals. Perform scientific techniques or research protocols. Assist the PI in designing and performing protocols. Design and perform experiments. Collect and log research data. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. Should mentor research assistants/students.Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols.Prepare and present presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.Maintain the laboratory work areas including maintenance on lab equipment as required. Order and organize research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstation. Maintain data server. Qualifications: EducationDoctorate degree required for Post Doc. Candidates must possess an MD with a completed Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training, MD/PhD or PhD in Cellular Immunology, Systems Immunology, or Stem Cell Biology. Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists are also welcome to apply for the fellowship.ExperienceMinimum of 5 years job related experience. Must have distinguished themselves in research. Prior recipient of funding for research based on individual achievements.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAbility to work independently. Ability to secure funding for research. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in peer-reviewed manuscripts and communicate results in oral presentations. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.
