The Vice President of Communications for Kaplan North America will be responsible for providing communications leadership and counsel for Kaplan North America (KNA) to ensure its responsiveness to the changing needs of its internal and external constituencies, with a synchronous communications strategy that supports the organization’s business growth strategy focused on portfolio sales and lifelong learning for B2C, B2B and B2U stakeholders.
The Vice President will establish KNA’s communications framework and function, and oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications program that galvanizes a team across goals, sharing critical information across the organization. This includes creating and managing internal C-suite communications to employees as well as external communications across multiple media channels, including guidance on social media issues of significance.
This position works in partnership with Marketing, Human Resources, Experience Office, Vertical Markets, Sales, Strategy and other key business and administrative areas as well as in direct collaboration with university and business partners to establish a comprehensive, integrated communications effort. The Vice President partners with Kaplan Inc.’s Corporate Communications department on a wide range of communications and public relations projects and works closely to ensure that Kaplan’s branding, image and reputation are enhanced and protected and that communications are closely aligned with the company’s purpose, business goals and core values.
Develop a comprehensive communications plan in concert with the mission and business goals of KNA and provide the leadership to achieve effective implementation.
Staff and supervise a communications function to support the evolving needs of KNA, focused on cultivating both internal employee engagement and external brand reputation and awareness.
Build a multifaceted thought leadership program that positions key leaders across multiple channels, including traditional media outlets, social media platforms, speaking engagements, webinars, salons, podcasts.
Direct the strategy and execution of media relations for the various KNA businesses, including both responsive and proactive media outreach and placement.
Work directly with the C-suite and other senior managers to write various announcements, speeches, articles, web messages and other communications on their behalf as needed.
Anticipate issues, provide counsel and planning for handling crisis communications and serve as the frontline as needed.
Develop and produce C-suite-hosted all-employee events, including Town Halls, Q&A sessions, employee engagement events.
Help to cultivate an engaging KNA culture through a robust program of internal communications, including CEO communications, intranet communications, and employee engagement activities.
Interface with the various internal management groups, providing overall communications strategies and work product for various specified projects.
Cultivate Kaplan’s reputation as an innovative, digitally driven, socially conscientious global education leader with a diverse and inclusive culture through employee and customer brand ambassadorship
Assist in leveraging programs, policies, and resources to enhance corporate reputation and advance KNA’s leadership role in education and policy circles.
Work closely with the Kaplan, Inc. Communications team to ensure alignment with goals.
EXPERIENCE / ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:
Minimum 10-12 years’ work experience in public relations and/or marketing.
Experience in communications strategy, planning and implementation, including developing and implementing proactive media strategies and serving as an organizational spokesperson.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
Strong, dynamic leadership, decision-making and strategic positioning skills that complement exceptional business acumen.
Strategic thinker with experience in managing crises and handling sensitive issues, including competitive, regulatory and social issues.
Experience managing a wide range of communications channels including traditional media, social media, digital platforms, podcasts and the like.
Orientation to detail, deadlines, process and project management.
Management experience; team environment orientation.
Significant experience initiating and managing communications campaigns.
Experience with development and production of employee events
Ability to adapt and work in a fast-paced and fluid environment.
Ability to multi-task and handle high pressure situations.
Willingness to serve as both lead and dig into implementation as needed
