The primary responsibility of this position is to operate and troubleshoot the highly technical, state-of-the art mass cytometer, as it is applied to translational and clinical research studies. Other instrument operations may include multi-parameter laser-based cell sorters and flow cytometers. Successful performance in this role generally requires several years of experience, as well as some in-depth technical training. This individual will collaborate closely with numerous laboratories in the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) to assist with design and execution of experiments involving mass and flow cytometry using higher-parameter cytometry panels. This individual will also support and maintain several sophisticated flow cytometry devices, including Fluidigm CyTOF, BD LSRII, LSR-Fortessa, and Beckman-Coulter CytoFLEX analysis units. Associated responsibilities include oversight of instrument calibration, routine maintenance, data analysis and billing.
This work requires knowledge of laboratory concepts, practices and procedures, operations, and regulatory requirements - including for the analysis of untested human samples under BSL2 conditions. Additionally, this position requires a basic knowledge of mass/flow cytometry, which may be partly achieved with on the job training, as it applies to a research laboratory environment. In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the range of duties includes, but is not limited to: inventory control, writing/editing/implementation of standard procedures (SOPs), purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, monitoring environmental risks and quality control.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides basic-level operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of mass cytometer, multi-laser flow cytometry analyzers for the members of the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC).
Collaborates with the laboratory personnel to design appropriate mass/flow cytometry studies.
Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, practices and methods specifically used in mass and flow cytometry analysis. Demonstrates working knowledge in multi-parameter analysis of cells and identification of cell populations using mass/flow cytometry technology. Certain applications may include physical sorting of sub-cellular components.
Assists with the development and implemention procedures to accomplish work operations and objectives in support of research activities and to ensure efficient utilization of the core laboratory resources.
Assists in the design, development and execution of research operations within the core. Schedules work, ensures proper maintenance of all equipment and troubleshoots multiple cell phenotyping, and mass/flow cytometry analysis instruments.
Provides technical oversight of all instrumentation in the core laboratory. Ensures proper maintenance of all instrumentation. Ensures proper use and safety of equipment.
Assists in the design and implementing training programs and provides technical support to users of the core instruments. Trains users in the proper use of the user-based instruments.
Monitors use of equipment and ensures that supplies and inventory are maintained. Ensures compliance with safety standards to maintain a safe environment.
Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills and basic knowledge of computer programs such as MS Word and Excel.
Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:
General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office
BS/BA, or equivalent, in Biology, Chemistry or Physics required.
Survey knowledge of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, microbiology or genetics.
Minimum one year of laboratory research experience
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.
Masters in Biotechnology a plus.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:
Good verbal and written skills are required, as is a basic knowledge of computer science.
Prior experience with CellQuest or DiVa software is helpful but not required.
***JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
