Schulze Diabetes Institute Researcher 1 – 8352R1 Job Description
Position will report to Director of Islet Manufacturing and R&D in performing duties and responsibilities as Researcher 1 in the Schulze Diabetes Institute. The purpose of the Researcher 1 position is to assist the Directors on the Isolation of Human Islets, Procurement of Pig Islets, and Quality Control of both manufactured products at the Cores within the Department of Surgery's Schulze Diabetes Institute. This position will assist in the isolation, purification, and culture of primary pancreatic islets of Langerhans and other cell types from various sources for research projects and clinical transplantation. General laboratory functions are also expected of this position.
Isolation and quality control assessment of different types of pancreatic islets and other cell types from primary tissues—60% • Isolation, purification, culture of islets and other cells types using sterile technique. • Prepare media, enzymes, and solutions under sterile conditions and in large quantities ahead of time. • Perform quality control of islets and other cell types, sterility testing at the bench and contribute to research and development of assays and manufacturing processes with supervision
General Team and Lab Duties-First time doing activities will be done in parallel to Tissue Culture Techniques—20% • Restocking of the staging areas; ordering and keeping inventory lot numbers for solutions/equipment • Washing instruments, packing, wrapping, autoclaving material and equipment used in isolation and sterile long term culture of pancreatic islets and other cells following standing operating procedures and reporting deviations from them as soon as possible. • Culturing cell products and changing media with sterile technique, long term sterile culture • Participate in lab meetings with collegial and positive input for the teams’ work. • Assist researchers with packing and transporting the islet product.
Assisting the director with data management and drafting scientific reports—10% • Computer knowledge to enter data from cell culture preparations into existing databases; spreadsheets and web-based applications. • Summarize and report data to director of the Islet Core Laboratory.
Research and Development—10% • Conduct background literature search on relevant topics including current methods, reagents, and ethics. • Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the principles behind daily work. • Assist with development of protocol for process improvement projects. • Perform periodic literature reviews.

Required qualifications: BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years. This position requires on-call hours that could require the candidate to work nights and weekends.
Preferred qualifications: BS in biological sciences with experience working in a biological sciences laboratory.
