POSITION TITLE: Residential Psychiatric Nurse SITE: Residential Services/Casa Kids Campus
REPORTS TO: Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Head of Service
Provide for the psychiatric health care needs of the clients in Casa de Amparo’s care. Work in collaboration with Consulting Psychiatrist, Clinical and Treatment Teams as well as Casa de Amparo Health Care staff. Collaborate with Residential Services staff to provide quality, comprehensive and continuous personalized psychiatric and medical care for all residents, ensuring documentation is maintained according to regulatory requirements. Observe residents, diagnose, document and report changes in resident conditions, such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and take necessary action.
Care and Supervision of Residents:
Provide appropriate basic mental health care and education for residents to promote positive mental health practices, prevent illness, and reduce risk-taking behaviors.
Support Residential staff in providing mental healthcare to residents during crisis or illness.
Oversee psychotropic medication management for Residential Services pursuant to Community Care Licensing regulations, County Institution Evaluation Unit (IEU) and The Joint Commission standards.
In coordination with the Consulting Psychiatrist and Health Care staff, monitor and evaluate residents’ responses to newly initiated or discontinued psychotropic medications.
As a member of the Treatment Team, provide input for use in assessment of residents and psychotropic medication evaluations.
Oversee medication supply, documentation and destruction in compliance with regulations.
Ensure staff are appropriately trained on assisted self-administration of medication, universal precautions, high alert medications, look alike/sound alike medications and medication errors.
Oversee Casa de Amparo’s medical record documentation including in compliance with CCL, County IEU, The Joint Commission and other contract requirements.
Support Health Care Staff with Casa de Amparo’s Influenza Vaccination Program and participate on the organization’s Quality Assurance Committee as appropriate.
Participate in Treatment Team, staff meetings and other meetings as appropriate.
Transport residents to medical appointments as needed.
Manage the Health Care staff, daily operations and cleanliness of the Health Center and relationships with the Consulting Psychiatrist and community-based healthcare professionals.
Manage general and mental health care for residents and examine, treat, and/or refer residents for care for injury or illness, as appropriate.
Review or create a psychiatric treatment plan with each pregnant resident at admission.
Oversee and account for all assisted self-administration of prescribed psychotropic and other medications, assist Psychiatrist in evaluating medications prescribed for medication effectiveness, side effects, and complications, and arrange for lab work according to protocol.
Provide social support for residents by creating and encouraging them to take advantage of opportunities such as support groups, social activities and other therapeutic measures.
Perform general nursing and psychiatric care responsibilities for children with special health care needs as specified in their Individualized Health Care Plan (i.e. transferring non-ambulatory clients, respiratory treatments, pregnancy, etc.)
In collaboration with the Treatment Team and Health Care staff, participate in the organization and management of medication coaching and delivery to residents. Integrate medication management into treatment plans.
Ensure information regarding communicable diseases is reported to Quality Assurance for reporting and/or infection control/quarantine, as appropriate.
Ensure residents receive medication evaluations and psychiatric assessments with the Consulting Psychiatrist within required time frames.
Oversee submission of JV220A (Physician’s Statement) or JV220B (Physician’s Request to Continue Medication), which is completed/signed by Psychiatrist, to appropriate County placement worker(s) for the purpose of the JV220 (Application for Psychotropic Medication) being submitted for Court approval.
Oversee accurate tracking of the Consulting Psychiatrist hours and quarterly peer review of Psychiatrist’s progress notes and medication documentation in compliance with County QI/QM requirements and The Joint Commission standards.
May manage and perform confirmatory testing and quality control checks for Waived Testing.

Must be able to be associated with Casa de Amparo through Community Care Licensing (CCL), which typically includes clearance by FBI, DOJ and CACI.
Current CA Licensed BSN or MSN with Board certification in psychiatric nursing preferred.
Minimum two years psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
Knowledge of and experience with health care needs in a residential setting.
Knowledge of principles and practices of general psychiatric and pediatric nursing. Experience with pregnant and parenting youth preferred.
Knowledge of developmental needs of youth ages 0-18 years and developmental stages.
Experience providing crisis intervention with pediatric/adolescent population.
Knowledge of psychotropic and general medications and effects on children.
Experience working with MediCal, Community Care Licensing (CCL), The Joint Commission, and the Health and Human Service Agency system of care preferred.
Must have the physical ability to participate in activities and perform related physical skills, including, but not limited to, crouching, lifting 50 pounds, crawling on hands and knees, and walking up and down stairs.
Ability to comply with all employment requirements including, but not limited to CPR/Pediatric 1st Aid, physical, TB and drug screen clearance, clear DMV record and approval from insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles. Must provide proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles.

Each Casa Kid receives comprehensive trauma informed care tailored to their individual physical, social, emotional, developmental, and educational needs, while also ensuring they have as many healthy childhood experiences as possible.
Residential Services is licensed to serve pregnant and parenting youth, non-ambulatory youth and youth with special healthcare needs. It is the only licensed residential treatment center in San Diego County serving pregnant and/or parenting foster youth.
