Acting under the general direction of the volunteer Board of Directors, the President will serve as managing officer for the organization. The President will be responsible for leading and managing the SDBA and affiliates, not only by providing vision and strategy, but also through the execution of day-to-day activities of this volunteer membership organization. The President will formulate, recommend and implement policies, programs and strategies that further the objectives of the Association and its affiliates.
The Organization: South Dakota Bankers Association (SDBA)
The South Dakota Bankers Association is the premier professional and trade association for South Dakota’s financial services industry. Established in 1884, the SDBA enhances members’ ability to be preeminent providers of financial services. Ninety-five percent of potential members belong to the Association.
Core services provided to the membership include:
Government Relations Advocacy – Represent the interests of SDBA members with state and federal legislative and regulatory bodies.
Public Relations and Media – Serve as a spokesperson for the banking industry in South Dakota.
Education and Staff Development – Provide education and training that enhances the profitability of SDBA members while providing of increased non-dues income to the Association.
The SDBA is the sole owner of a for-profit subsidiary engaged in the sale of insurance and other products to banks and their customers. The SDBA is also the sponsor of a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides scholarship opportunities and promotes internship programs aimed at helping member banks attract future banking professionals. The consolidated budget of the SDBA and its affiliates approaches $2 million and is staffed by nine total employees.
The Preferred Candidate
The SDBA seeks an individual with at least five years of association experience, either as a chief staff officer or as a manager of significant programs. A bachelor’s degree is required, and an MBA and/or CAE are desirable.
Above all, the successful candidate will be an extraordinary communicator, a self-starter, someone who engenders trust and confidence, and has unquestionable integrity and judgment. A premium will be placed on leadership and strategic, innovative, out-of-the-box thinking, as well as the ability to manage a changing, complex organization serving a changing, complex industry. Excellent government relations instincts and aptitude for lobbying are required.
