What will you be doing in this role?
The Pharmacy Technician in our Medical Network will assist supporting the physician and clinical staff offices in the delivery of health care by performing a variety of medically related tasks in the area of pharmaceutical supplies and services. In addition, this position will be responsible for supporting the Cedars-Sinai Medical Group pharmacists in the daily operations of the Pharmacy Refill Center in the Medical Network. The Pharmacy Technician primary role is to assist the pharmacists and Cedars-Sinai Medical Group primary care physicians (and other physicians as directed) in the processing of medication refill requests by preparing the requests for review and approval/denial by the pharmacists working under protocol on behalf of the physicians, and by the physicians themselves. In this capacity, you will gather and prepare information from patient records for pharmacist and/or physician review in determining the appropriateness of medication requests. All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Oversees appropriate use of Pyxis
Provides training to all nursing staff on the appropriate use of Pyxis
Ensures staff is properly signing out medications and all medications are accounted for.
Restocks appropriate medications into Pyxis as par levels decrease.
Performs inventory of medications in Pyxis on a weekly basis.
Checks for expired medications on a monthly basis
Sends expired medications back to manufacturer/vendor, if applicable.
Assures all refrigeration temperatures are in range
Generates various reports from Pyxis on a daily/weekly/monthly basis depending on the report
Facilitates Injectable Medication Authorization process
Educates and reinforces office staff regarding the completion of the injectable medication referral form.
Assists Pharmacy Buyer with Medication Purchasing (if necessary)
Creates P.Os for all medications to be purchased in Peoplesoft
Procures medications from appropriate vendor based on established or projected inventory needs for all medical group office locations.
Verifies accuracy of medications received and conducts follow-up when problems are identified.
Performs weekly audits of vendor invoices to ensure company is billed at the contract price.
Audits charts to determine discrepancy between Pyxis and EMR.
Creates standard reports
Creates ad hoc reports as necessary
Coordinates pulling of recalled medications throughout medical suites and returns to the manufacturer/vendor.
Receive refill requests and enter refill requests into CS-Link for authorization review.
Conduct chart or laboratory searches as necessary and transcribe relevant information to the refill encounter.
Communicate pertinent information to pharmacist and/or prescribing physician.
Ensure that each refill request is documented in the patient's chart.
Monitor and respond to e-mail and electronic medical record inbox/in-baskets messages and other communications in a timely manner throughout the work day.
Resolve pharmacy conflicts on behalf of the CSMG physician.
Assist in obtaining prior authorizations from insurance plans.
