Classification Concept Responsible for handling highly complex research projects often as the senior laboratory member. Primarily responsible for all aspects of the project including budgets and internal and external regulatory compliance filings. Operates independently with guidance and oversight from principal investigator by exception generally only confined by the research agenda and priorities of the department. Highest research title requiring incumbent with a substantial research publication record and scholarly recognition in the field of study.
Responsibilities Plan and execute complex laboratory research studies. Define and lead specific strategies for initiation and execution of research projects. Manage research needs in a laboratory environment. Aides the principal investigator in the design, implementation, evaluation, and analysis of both independent and collaborate research projects. Responsible for the creation and review of an operating budget. Considered by the scientific community to be an expert in the field.⨠Manage multiple ongoing research experimental procedures relevant to diverse existing and pilot projects.⨠Prioritize and co-interpret results from overlapping collaborative and externally published complementary and/or competitive research studies.⨠Analyze, interpret, and report scientific data in local and national scientific meetings and peer- reviewed publications. Operational Role Modifies practices and procedures to improve efficiency and quality; searches for better ways to effectively achieve end results by, for example, scheduling work steps, arranging/ re-arranging the way work is generally performed, and adding or deleting elements of processes as necessary. Scope of Measurable Impact Actions tend to affect a department or critical project outcomes; performance results tend to relate to efficiency, degree of waste/cost overruns, quality/continuous improvement, timeliness, and resource allocation/effectiveness. Independence and Decision-Making Work is focused on and regulated by specific personal goals and milestones; generally can act based on own judgment as long as actions adhere to policy and operating procedures, and remain focused on objectives -- seeking assistance only when highly difficult issues arise or when confronted with problems of considerable material or political consequence. Complexity and Problem Solving Problems are frequently unique and unexpected. Resolution of issue needs expert level knowledge of discipline and the ability to push back on internal processes to determine the root cause of the issue. Issues are those that have campus or university wide impact.
