The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition seeks a Research Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher) to work in Dr. Les Bourquin’s research program. The primary responsibilities for this position are to assist in the implementation of a USDA-funded project to study acceptance of food safety standards for the production of fruit and vegetable projects by buyers of these commodities in the corporate sector. This research will assess reasons why buyers may not accept certain standards, such as group certification programs, and evaluate potential approaches to address buyer concerns about specific food safety standards for the fresh produce sector. The primary duties will include 1) leading the development and execution of a series of interviews and surveys to assess knowledge of produce-sector food safety standards by buyers and other industry stakeholders, 2) evaluating the potential of various solutions to address buyer reluctance to use certain standards, 3) analyzing and reporting the results of this research, and 4) assisting in communicating the results of this research to produce industry stakeholders. The successful candidate also will help organize and manage a stakeholder advisory board for this project. Some domestic travel in support of this project will be required.
Doctorate -Food Science, Human Nutrition, Agricultu
A doctorate degree in Food Science, Human Nutrition, Agricultural Economics, Community Sustainability or a related discipline, with a strong focus on survey research methods. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
Experience in US and international food safety regulatory requirements, and developing and delivering communication messages on food safety/food standards concepts for diverse audiences. The ability to work independently and possess good organizational skills.
