Direct Supervision: 3-6 Months
Terms of Employment: June – June; 12 months
Estimated Workload: Seasonal 40 to 60 hours per week
Emergency Duties (Nights / Week): 3-5
Emergency Duties (Weekends / Month): 2-3
Philosophy of Internship: Our aim is to provide new veterinarians the opportunity to gain experience and advanced skills in diagnostic and therapeutic management of the sport horse, as well as general practice and emergency medicine, while working under the guidance of senior clinicians. The internship is intended to be primarily hands-on learning with direct and indirect supervision throughout the internship. Each mentor will work with the intern to ensure that their learning goals are met. Upon completion of our program, our interns will have excellent veterinary and communication skills suitable for employment in advanced equine practice.
Internship Duties: Assisting senior clinicians with in-hospital and ambulatory cases, as well as surgical cases. Daily intern duties will include: treatment and assessment of hospitalized patients; maintaining patient records, client communication, after hours and overnight treatment of critical patients, and rotating emergency duty once a training period is met. Interns will spend a significant amount of time working alongside current senior practitioners on daily appointments in addition to managing hospitalized cases, scrubbing into surgery, running anesthesia, and will gain independence as the internship progresses. Interns may have the opportunity to spend time working at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL as well as HITS horse show in IL and other local horse shows. Intern duties/time will be allocated based upon what is best for the intern's advancement based on his or her interests as well as for the practice.
Requirements to be considered for this position include DVM (or equivalent) from an AVMA accredited veterinary school; successful completion of the NAVLE or NBE and CCT; eligible for licensing in Illinois and Wisconsin; US Citizenship; curriculum vitae, letter of intent, transcript, and three letters of recommendation. An externship at Chicago Equine Medical Center is highly recommended.
Additional requirements include a passion for equine medicine; ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed; positive attitude; team player; and desire for a hands-on internship with direct and indirect supervision.
