Provide for the safety of employees, students, and visitors by leading and directing all environmental health and safety initiatives, including advising all parts of the University on regulations, best practices, and compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and safety requirements.
DIRECTSUPERVISORYRESPONSIBILITY: Environmental Health and Safety Specialists with a focus in Chemical Hygiene, Hazardous Waste, and Chemical Hygiene in addition to Work Study Students; Contractors and/or Vendors.
Typically a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Public Health, Environmental Health, or related field. Master's degree preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation and safety standards applicable to a university environment.
Possession of a California Driver's License and ability to drive a motor vehicle safely for extended periods of time.
Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in implementing programs to assist in compliance with laws, regulations, and performance standards in environmental health and safety. Five years of progressive supervisory responsibilities and development of training programs.
Ability to interpret laws and regulations to assist with University compliance. Ability to exercise initiative and independent sound judgment in unusual or new situations.
Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information. Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
Maintain knowledge and expertise with federal, state, and local regulations on chemical storage, emergency procedures, sanitary sewer, air pollution control, and hazardous waste disposal.
Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: health & safety laws, policies, and procedures as it relates to environmental health; OSHA, and other regulatory regulations.
Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
